Client: Redrow Homes South Wales

CDS was appointed by Redrow Homes to prepare the design information for the Reserved Matters planning application for 260 dwellings on land at Hendredenny. An irregular shaped site located on the steep north east facing slope of the Aber Valley with level differences of approximately 57m.

The key design principles of the development proposals were :-

  • Integration into existing vehicular movement network along Hendredenny Drive;

  • Design of a main access road that zig zags down the site in order to deal with the steep topography with a number of smaller cul-de-sacs off;

  • Provision of a new pedestrian link to the Cwm yr Aber cycleway situated to the east of the site;

  • Retention & enhancement of existing vegetation with buffer zones provided to perimeter boundaries to protect established trees & hedgerows & contribute to the green landscape structure of the site & aid biodiversity;

  • Areas of public open space which incorporate surface water attenuation features;

  • Play area provision of 2no. LEAPS & a MUGA;

  • Development clearance of former mineshaft situated just outside the site’s northern boundary.

 

A range of dwelling types is provided with 200 open market in a mix of 2-4 bedroom terraced, semi-detached & detached forms & 60 affordable, 1-4 bedroom maisonette, terraced & semi- detached homes in small clusters around the site. House types are a mix of 2 & 2.5 storey in Redrow’s distinctive ‘Arts & Craft’ architecture style with a material palette of red, buff, orange brick, white render under a grey or brown roof to reflect the existing vernacular.
